What is a psychologist?

Psychologists study people’s behaviour, thoughts, feelings and emotions, working to improve mental health and wellbeing. They can work in various settings within the healthcare field from hospitals and health clinics to mental health facilities and psychiatric institutions. Often psychologists work alongside patients or their work can be more research based.

Many of the problems tackled by psychologists include:

  • Children facing parental divorce
  • Anger management
  • Overcoming anxiety, depression and stress
  • Aiding recovery from a traumatic injury/experience
  • Coping with grieving the death of a loved one
  • Managing chronic illnesses
  • Ensuring students are being taught effectively
  • Assisting the police and courts (Forensic Psychology)

How do you become a psychologist?

Unlike a psychiatrist, they don’t need a medical degree but do require a minimum of six-years relevant education and training for general registration as a psychologist in Australia. Three years of this are as an undergraduate, the fourth is accredited psychology studies and the remaining years are within an internship pathway or postgraduate study to general registration.

Those who choose the option of a postgraduate pathway can also go on to do a PsyBA registrar program.

What does a psychologist earn?

The average salary for a psychologist in Australia is $85,061 per year. This will alter according to experience and sometimes specialism.
