Find a More Confident You with These 'Power Poses'

The way people hold themselves can completely change how outsiders perceive them. When going into an interview, it’s extremely important that your first impressions make a positive impact. You want to come across confident (not cocky) so employers can see you’re assured in your ability to do the job - and they can be too!
Are you someone who struggles with confidence? Something as simple as adapting the way you stand in the lead up to your interview can make you feel more relaxed, so you’re ready to answer any questions the interviewer may have for you.
Amy Cuddy, a researcher from Harvard University, held a study in 2012 that showed how ‘power poses’ can quite literally change your body’s chemistry. According to the study, standing in a power pose for 2minutes a day can increase your testosterone levels by 20% and decrease cortisol levels by 25% - therefore making you feel more confident and less stressed!
So, what does a power pose look like…
Hands on Hips (aka the Wonder Woman Pose)
Doing the ‘Wonder Woman Pose’ makes you feel assertive. Try to find a quiet spot before your interview where you can do this pose for 2minutes. Stand up tall and take deep breaths to help calm your mind and rein in that confidence.
The steepled hand pose is nice and subtle; you can comfortably sit like this while you’re waiting to be called into your interview. This is also an easy pose to carry out wherever you are e.g. on public transport or in the waiting area.
Lean with Your Hands on the Desk
Leaning on a desk (or any surface you can find), is a great way of mentally taking ownership of the situation you’re facing. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this in the waiting area of where your interview is taking place, find a bathroom and lean on the sink or vanity area for a couple of minutes.
A power pose is meant to be open and strong. The more closed in you are, the more intimidated and unassured you feel. This also comes across to others so avoid holding your hands in your lap, hugging yourself or hunching over.
Note: Avoid these poses within your interview - stick to using them before going in!
Take a deep breath, shrug your shoulders and relax. You’ve got this!
