If you’re tired of rural life and fancy something a bit faster paced, a move to Dublin could be exactly what you need. There’s nothing like the hustle and bustle of a capital city to make you feel like you’ve hit the big time, but relocating from the peace and quiet of the countryside can feel pretty overwhelming if you’re not used to it, especially for nurses moving from smaller rural hospitals to big city ones.

To help you adjust to your new nurse job in Dublin, we’ve put together some handy tips for a quick and easy transition.

  1. Research what’s in Dublin

Dublin might not be the biggest capital city in the world, but it’s got one hell of a reputation. From a fascinating history and captivating culture, to museums and nightlife, this is a great place to start fresh. You’ll certainly never be bored here, that’s for sure! All it takes is a quick Google search to find endless lists of great ways to pass your time (or you could simply jump on your bike and leave the exploration to pure chance).

  1. Find out about your new hospital

Like with any new job, researching the company (or hospital in this case) is always a good idea. Nursing jobs in Dublin are no different to any other big city hospital in that the staff will no doubt be rushed off their feet, so find out as much as you can about your new place of work before you start. Don’t forget to pay close attention during your induction too!

  1. Think outside the box for meeting new people

Starting out in a new city can feel really lonely at times, and there’s no shame in that. Feeling alone and a bit homesick is perfectly natural when your entire life has shifted to a whole different part of the country.

Thankfully, Dublin has plenty going on, so making friends is that much easier. Why not try a fitness class at your local gym (yoga is a terrific way to loosen up those tight muscles and release tension from busy nursing shifts), or take part in a local cooking course.

  1. Make your home a sanctuary

We all know that nursing jobs aren’t always a walk in the park. It takes a lot of energy and skill to be a great nurse (especially if you’re working in a busy hospital), and time to relax can be hard to come by. If you’ve recently taken on your first Dublin nursing role, your space should be a place to unwind and decompress after hours spent on your feet.

Make sure you find time to unpack all your moving boxes and create a place to really call home, not just somewhere to eat and sleep between shifts. Studies show that a comfortable, tidy home is better for your mood and your long-term mental health.

  1. Be confident - you’ve got this

It may be daunting starting your first shift in a new hospital, but you’re a qualified professional and you know what you’re doing, so have faith in yourself - go and slay your first day!
