Progressing Your Optometry Career

If you’ve worked as an optometrist for any length of time, you’re probably aware that the role has the potential to be fairly repetitive. That’s why it’s important to take steps to add variety to your work-life, giving yourself the option to step into a role that involves more than just testing.

Here are my top tips on how to expand your career in optometry…

After Graduation

Whilst in your first years of practice, try to take on as many different types of patients as you can. Take NHS bookings, walk-ins (if your practice allows it) and ask for further responsibilities – however small they might be.

Seek Advice on Different Specialisms

Speak to Dispensing Opticians, Contact Lens Opticians and experienced Optical Assistants for help on dispensing and contact lenses.

Take on More Responsibilities

If you work in a small practice and are given the ability to make decisions, try your hand at ordering specific lenses/frames, or learning about procurement, clinical standards and professional standards.

You could also step into secondary supervision. It only requires a little extra time on your part, but can really add to a student’s experience, as well as looking great on your CV.

Change Up Your Place of Work

If you’ve always worked within an independent practice, try a new environment. It’s important to be an expert in all manner of optical set-ups. This is something Your World can help with!

Get involved with the Local Optical Committee and speak to more experienced Optometrists.
