What is a Theatre Nurse?
A theatre nurse is responsible for the care of patients of all ages within operating theatres, anaesthetic and recovery areas. They work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists, operating department practitioners (ODPs) and the wider perioperative team, and the role may see them involved in procedures on wards or in clinics. They are responsible for pre-operative assessments and instilling trust and confidence in the patient, then acting as an assistant to the anaesthetist, providing support during the surgical phase, and monitoring patients’ health on recovery.
Theatre nurse jobs will often have similar duties to ODPs – depending on their skills and training. ODPs are an essential part of the clinical team, providing patient care and support throughout the anaesthetic, surgical and recovery phase. ODP jobs may entail post holders being a scrubbed person, first assistant to the surgeon or surgical assistant. Further training in this role could cover areas including anaesthetics, pharmacology and infection control.
Healthcare professionals considering theatre nurse jobs will need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and, after an induction period, will undertake specialist training. For ODP jobs, candidates will need to complete a Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice, be accepted onto the state register and be a member of the College of Operating Department Practitioners.
Those looking to work in theatres or ODP jobs should be confident and competent working in a busy, specialist team. You should also have an approachable, friendly manner as these roles will put you in constant contact with patients and you’ll need to earn their trust. Health professionals in these roles will benefit from the ability to learn quickly, an understanding of health and safety and the issues regarding patient confidentiality.
Professionals may also consider opportunities for locum theatres jobs.
Locum Theatres jobs
Although it means giving up the stability of a permanent contract, locum theatres jobs for nurses or operating department practitioners (ODPs) are worth considering if you want more flexible working hours, or are just unsure of the area you want to settle in for a career. For professionals looking for theatre nurse jobs and ODP jobs, locum work provides the opportunity to experience different hospitals and environments, learn new working practices, and open up new career opportunities.
Locum theatres jobs may see staff working in specialist areas including scrub, anaesthetics and recovery, in either ad-hoc or long-term agency work, so there’s plenty of scope for variety. Locum work may earn a higher rate of pay per day than if you were to be on a regular contract, and some Locum Appointments for Training (LATs) will even count towards a professional qualification.
